These women eventually married the Roman men. The Roman men tricked the Sabine men into attending a party to the god Neptune (read aloud is incorrect), and stole the Sabine women. Romulus came up with a plan to steal women from the Sabines, a group of people living on a hill near Rome. Romulus needed women in order for the village to continue past one generation. This created an immediate problem, because most of those people were men. Those who decided to leave with him were mostly slaves, criminals and those in debt. Romulus came from a city up-river from Rome and went back to his home city, asking those who wanted a fresh, new start to come and populate his new village. Homes were made from wood with thatched roofs, with a palisade to protect the village from intruders.

Romulus picked the Palatine Hill, a hill near the Tiber River for the location of the small settlement of Rome. In an argument, Romulus killed his brother Remus, and became the first king of Rome. As time passed, Romulus and Remus, twins and descendants of this marriage, co-founded Rome. Aeneas and the refugees wandered the Mediterranean, until they finally settled in central Italy, here Aeneas married the princess of an Italian king. Troy was razed, but Aeneas, the hero of Troy, escaped with some of the riches of Troy and a group of refugees. As you remember, the Greeks defeated the Trojans by using the trick of the wooden horse. There is a legend about the founding of Rome that goes back to the Trojan War. Rome began as a small farming village, but it would grow into a large ancient city that is still active today. The boys were originally cared for by a she-wolf, after having been abandoned, to die, in the Tiber River. Faustalus, the kind shepard, finds Romulus and Remus and brings them home, where he and his wife raise them as their own.
